Urban design & building proposal for a York Exhibition Centre located inside the city walls opposite the train station.
Urban design focused on remedial work to improve access from the train station through the city walls into the centre. Proposed removal of disused rail & road bridges allowed the direct access through a rare existing modern opening within the city walls.
The aims were to remove the convoluted route that railway arrivals currently take; to initiate a "Green Node" and "Green Routes" throughout the city, as specified in York City Council's current action plan; to remove cramped and badly arranged buildings surrounding the original York Station building, and propose a conversion into a York University Science & Technology educational facility.
The building proposal, located within the urban design, is an Exhibition Centre facility. The aim was to increase the presence of York Univeristy, a science & technology specialist, within the city and to help promote York as a "Science City", again a key concept in York Council's action plan. The location was a prime position to highlight these activities to visitors to the city who could otherwise be oblivious to York's modern aims.
